I used to work at a big graphic design company. Not as a designer, but as an account manager.
I made the choice at a very young adult age that I couldn’t cut it as a graphic designer because I was extremely uncomfortable with people criticizing my work and didn’t’ feel I had the fortitude to make a living at a job where people would constantly be judging, discarding, or telling me I had to change something.
My first paying job as a designer was for a local rock band. I was in high school. I was supposed to paint the front of the drum kit with a logo I would design for a band called “Poor Heart”.
Today, I can re-create the graphic in Photoshop in about 10 minutes. Then (I won’t say how many years ago) I had to go to the hardware store to buy some glossy paint, a small brush and painter’s tape. Then I spent hours figuring out the height and width of the letters and how I could break them up in the middle of the heart. Then I placed the tape in the spaces between the letters and pretty much free-styled it. I was proud of it, but as I recall, it got mixed reviews at the teen dance club that weekend.
Then I realized that my work on the drum kit didn’t belong to me anymore. As soon as I took the money, it belonged to the drummer.
As a fine artist, everything I create is mine. Good or bad, ugly, or beautiful, all my work starts out in secret in my studio, for my eyes only. I can change it, toss it or if I think it’s good enough, even try to sell it. The selling comes AFTER the work is done, not before.
So, everything you see on this website came out the other end of my creative process. I own it. If you like it and want to buy it, that’s great. If you don’t, I can take the criticism, but please don't ask me to change it!
